Mouse stopped working after Vista update
Microsoft has recently released a new update called IdeaCom Technology Inc. – Input – IdeaCom HID Touch Screen (PS/2) mouse for Windows Vista. This update is displayed in Optional update in Automatic Windows Update screen and it has 31 KB size. As soon as this update is installed the PS/2 mouse and touchpad will loose their functionality. So if you see this update in your Windows Update screen do not just blindly install it. This update seems to be another Microsoft blopper. If you have already downloaded this update and trying to get rid off it then I would like to mention that uninstalling the driver from device manager will not fix this as after each restart it will install itself and keep you in loop. Not even doing system restore as this update will be prompted again and in worst case the restore will not remove the driver.
So, here is one solution that will offer a permanent fix for this issue:
1. Go to Start and Computer and browse to the following location C:\windows\system32\drivers.
2. In driver folder locate the file named “idcphid.sys” and rename it to “idcphidold.sys”
3. Click on Start and type device manager in the search box and hit Enter. IT will open Device Manager.
4. Now select + sign near Human Interface Devices” in “Device Manager and uninstall the “IdeaCom HID Touch Screen (PS/2)” driver .
5. IT might ask you to restart the PC. Upon restart the PS/2 mouse and touchpad will work normally.
Note: Some of the Windows XP users are also known to experience this issue. So steps for Windows XP might be little different.
If you are not good at using keyboard then you need to arrange a USB mouse to perform the steps.
Update:
You may also try the steps for a permanent fix:
In Windows Explorer, browse to C:\Windows\inf directory and locate “oemxx.inf” files. The “xx” is a number assigned by Windows. Just delete this file. (Thanks RSK10580)
