How to increase modem speaker volume in Windows XP
You are using a dial up connection and you are often worried about the volume of the modem speaker, when you dial to your ISP you hardly hear the dialtone. If the modem speaker is off then you can use the modem properties window to turn on or off the speaker. However if the sound is heard but very low then we need to use a user initialization string to adjust this setting. Here are the steps to do that.
Start the Phone and Modem Options Control Panel applet (go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Phone and Modem Options).
Select the Modems tab.
Select the modem, and click Properties.
Select the Advanced tab.
Add one of the options from the table below to the initialization string, and click OK.
Close the Control Panel applet. Here is the screen shot:
M0 Speaker always off
M1 Speaker on during connection
M2 Speaker always on (very noisy)
L0 Lowest volume
L1 Lowest volume (redundant)
L2 Medium volume
L3 Maximum volume
